The rich greenery and vast water bodies in Kerala make it one of the best dwelling places for animals. There are a number of famous wildlife reserves and a number of Kerala tours constitute of visit to these sanctuaries.
One among them is the Neyyar sanctuary. Neyyar is situated in the Southeast corner of the Western Ghats. It is the drainage basin of the Neyyar River and its tributaries – Mullayar and Kallar. The Neyyar sanctuary houses a varied species of wildlife. Its major attractions are a crocodile rearing center, dear farm and an exciting lion safari park. The lush green flora in the sanctuary breeds a stunning variety of fauna and aero fauna. The wild animals like tiger, leopard, barking deer, bonnet macaque, sambar, elephants, gaur, sloth bear, nilgiri tahr, jungle cat, wild boar, nilgiri and Langur etc are commonly seen in the sanctuary. The reservoir is close to the airport and the railhead and hence is easily accessible. It stretches across a distance of 9.06 kilometers.
Another famous wildlife is situated in the Wayanad district of Kerala and is called Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It is situated near Bandipur tiger reserve and Mudumalai sanctuary. This place has been included in the Project Elephant Scheme as it is one of the best elephant habitats in peninsular India. The sanctuary has rare species like the Wild boar, Sloth bear, Malabar giant squirrel, Bonnet Macaques, Langurs, Gaur, Sambar, Cheetal, Four horned antelopes and black bucks. Plantations of tea, coffee, cardamom, pepper and rubber are commonly found as the soil of the area is very fertile and moist. Mist capped mountains and breathtaking landscapes within the sanctuary are a solace to the eyes
